Full text searching with IIIF by Maarten Coonen October 1, 2024 3 minute read

Imagine you have digitized many books from your collections and made them available via Omeka S in a IIIF-compliant viewer. Naturally you would also like your users to search the full text contents of these books, as that is something they cannot do with a physical copy. This blog will describe the steps to make this possible in Omeka S by using a module that implements the IIIF Content Search API.

Prerequisites

Make sure you have taken the following actions before you start:

  • Working Omeka S instance with IIIF modules enabled (see our previous post)
  • Digitized book... read more
Getting started with IIIF and Omeka S by Maarten Coonen August 21, 2024 2 minute read

In our previous post we described the “NDE Versnellen 2023” project in which we planned to make our Omeka S instance fully NDE compatible by implementing the IIIF-functionality on top of it.

This post presents the results of that project by guiding you through an easy-to-setup Dockerized environment consisting of Omeka S with IIIF preconfigured. We made this Dockerized Omeka S environment freely available under a GPL-3.0 open source license.

Please note that this Dockerized environment was designed for development purposes. We would not recommend production usage in its current state! Read our next post with deployment instructions... read more

Choosing an IIIF-Compliant Image Viewer - Mirador vs. Universal Viewer by Maryam Mazaheri September 19, 2024 1 minute read

Introduction

When integrating IIIF capabilities into our Omeka S environment, we needed to choose the right viewer to ensure optimal user experience for accessing digital collections. After extensive testing of the available options, we selected Mirador over Universal Viewer for a number of compelling reasons:

1. Faster Image Loading

Mirador outperformed Universa Viewer in loading high-resolution images, providing a smoother user experience.

2. Modern Interface

Its clean, modern design offers easy navigation and a visually engaging way to explore digital collections.

3. Advanced Features

Mirador supports useful tools like annotations, OCR overlays, and image adjustments (brightness,... read more

IIIF

The International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) is a set of open standards that is widely used by cultural heritage institutions to facilitate sharing, displaying and annotation of high-resolution digital images. It allows users to access, compare, and interact with images across various platforms seamlessly. IIIF consists of a set of APIs that deliver functionality.

Omeka S

Omeka S is a web publishing platform designed for institutions to manage and share digital collections and exhibits. It supports linked data, enabling the creation of interconnected content across multiple sites, making it ideal for collaborative projects and multi-institutional archives.
